Psalm 46:1-11
Verse of the Week
10 “Be still and know that I am God.”
~ Psalm 46:10

1) In the midst of turmoil, the Lord wants us to quiet our spirit!

  • Psalm 46:1 – “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.”
  • Psalm 46:2-3 – “Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, through its waters roar and foam, and the mountains quake with their surging.”
  • Psalm 46:10 – He says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”
  • Psalm 46:11 – “The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”
  • I Kings 19:11-13 – “The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’  Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind.  After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.  After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.  When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.”

2) Through prayer and meditation, the Lord brings us peace and stills our heart and mind!

  • Isaiah 26:3 – “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
  • Mark 1:35 – “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”
  • Matthew 6:6 – “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”
  • Psalm 4:4 – “Tremble and do not sin; meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still.”

3) The Lord wants us to lead peaceful lives and avoid unnecessary conflict!

  • I Thessalonians 4:11 – “… Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life.  You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders…”
  • I Timothy 2:1-2 – “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
  • Proverbs 26:4 – “Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him.”
  • Proverbs 26:20 – “Without wood a fire goes out, without gossip a quarrel dies down.”
  • Proverbs 18:2 – “Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions.”
  • Matthew 7:6 – “Do not give dogs what is sacred, do not throw your pearls to pigs.  If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.”
  • James 1:19 – “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”
