Nehemiah 4:1-23
Verse of the Week
16 “From that day on, half of my men did the work, while the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armor. The officers posted themselves behind all the people of Judah, 17 who were building the wall. Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other, and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked.”
~ Nehemiah 4:16-17

1) Whenever we step out to do the Lord's work, to build God's house, we will come under spiritual attack!

  • Nehemiah 4:1-3 - Israel's enemies mocked the Jews who were rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem. "What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they finish in a day? ... What they are building - even a fox climbing up on the it would break down their wall of stones!" (Type of attack - "insults.")
  • Nehemiah 4:7-8 - Israel's enemies "were very angry and plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem…"  (Type of attack - "plotting together to fight")
  • Nehemiah 4:11 - "Also our enemies said, "Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work."  (Intent of attack - destroy life and stop God's work)
  • Nehemiah 4:12 - "Then the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times over, 'Wherever you turn, they will attack us."  (Use allies to undermine confidence)
  • Nehemiah 6:1-4 - "But they were scheming to harm me, so I sent messengers to them with this reply, 'I am carrying on a great project and cannot do down.  Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?' Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.  (Scheming to harm while offering compromise)
  • Nehemiah 6:5-9 - "Then the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter in which was written:
  • 'It is reported among the nations - and Geshem says its true - that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall…Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us meet together."  (Use slander or libel to spread lies and apply pressure)

2) The Lord gave Nehemiah and the Jews wisdom and courage to respond to these attacks and continue the work!

  • Nehemiah 4:4-5 - "Hear us, our God, for we are despised.  Turn their insults back on their heads.  Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity. Do not cover up their guilt or blot out their sins from your sight, for they have thrown insults in the face of the builders."  (Responds with prayer to God against their adversaries)
  • Nehemiah 4:6 - "So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart."  (Responds by working harder)
  • Nehemiah 4:9 - "But we prayed to our God and posted a guard day and night to meet this threat."  (Responds by praying to God and staying vigilant)
  • Nehemiah 4:14 - "After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, 'Dont be afraid of them.  Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes."  (Responds with faith in God and encourages all to continue fighting for what is right.)
  • Nehemiah 4:16-17 - "From that day on, half of my men did the work, while the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armor.  The officers posted themselves behind all the people of Judah, who were building the wall.  Those who carried materials did their work with one hand and help a weapon in the other, and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked."  (Responds by preparing to fight with God's wisdom while continuing the work)
  • Nehemiah 4:19-20 – “Then I said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, 'The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall.  Whenever your hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there.  Our God will fight for us!"  (Responds with faith and understanding that God will fight for them)
  • Nehemiah 6:8 - "I sent him this reply: 'Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head."  (Responds with courage by calling out the lies and not succumbing to the bullying behavior)
