The Importance of Baptism

I. Introduction.

  • At the end of each gospel, Jesus gave his disciples instructions to carry out the great commission. 
  • In Matthew 28:16-20: Jesus states this mission as follows: to make disciples of all nations, to baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and to teach them to obey all of Jesus' commands.
  • The first part of the mission involves bringing people into God's kingdom.  We discussed the importance of evangelism in the past.  This week we turn our attention to the importance of baptism.

II.  Reasons to get Baptized.

  • Baptism is not required for salvation but Christ commands it. (Matthew 28:19)
  • We become identified with Christ in his death, burial, and resurrection. (Romans 6:1-4)
  • We make a public proclamation that we are a new creation in Christ.  This heralds a new beginning and helps to promote Christ's kingdom.
  • We become cleansed, transformed, and are now able to walk differently. - "…And this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also - not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God.  It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ…" (I Peter 3:21)
  • Different from John's baptism for repentance. (Acts 19:1-7)
  • Believer's baptism takes place after Christ came and is evidence of salvation and complying with God's command.

III.  How to get Baptized?

  • The greek word "Baptizo" means immersion in water.
  • The believer's baptism involves full immersion into a body of water, which symbolizes a complete spiritual cleansing.
  • Example of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:36-38)

IV.  When to get Baptized?

  • Infant baptism - no reference or example in scripture.  Must be old enough to make an informed decision about getting baptized.
  • After repentance and salvation.  "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved but whoever does not believe will be condemned." (Mark 16:16)
  • Should have full understanding of what it means to be baptized before taking this important step.


  • Acts 19:1-7 - John's baptism of repentance differentiated from believer's baptism and receiving the Holy Spirit.
  • Colossians 2:12 - "Having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead."
  • I Corinthians 1:13-17 - "Is Christ divided?  Was Paul crucified for you?  Were you baptized into the name of Paul?  I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except…  For Christ did not send me to baptize, but the preach the gospel - not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power."
  • Ephesians 4:3-6 - "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.  There is one body and one Spirit - just as you were called to one hope when you were called - one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all."  
  • Luke 12:50 - "But I have a baptism to undergo and how distressed I am until it is completed."
  • Mark 10:39 - "Jesus said to them, ‘You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant.’"
  • Matthew 3:11 - "I baptize you with water for repentance.  But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry.  He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire."
  • Acts 22:16 - "Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name."

bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo…”

I.  Introduccion.

  • Al final de cada evangelio, Jesus dio instrucciones a los discipulos de ir y compartir la gran comision.
  • En Mateo 28:16-20: Jesus explica su mision de esta manera: hacer discipulos de todas las naciones, bautizarlos en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo, y del Espiritu Santo, y enseñarles a obedecer los mandamientos de Jesus.
  • La primer parte de la mision tiene que ver con traer gente al Reino de Dios. Discutimos la importancia del evangelism en el pasado. Esta semana ponemos atencion a la importancia del bautismo.

II.  Razones por cuales ser Bautizado.

  • El bautismo no es requerido para la salvacion pero es un mandato de Cristo. (Mateo 28:19)
  • Nos volvemos identificados con Cristo en su Muerte, entierro, y resureccion. (Romanos 6:1-4)
  • Hacemos una proclamacion publica de ser nueva creacion en Cristo Esto anuncia un nuevo inicio y ayuda a promover el reinado de Cristo.
  • Nos volvemos limpios, transformados, y caminamos diferente. “…Se salvaron mediante el agua,  la cual simboliza el bautismo que ahora los salva también a ustedes. El bautismo no consiste en la limpieza del cuerpo, sino en el compromiso de tener una buena conciencia delante de Dios. Esta salvación es posible por la resurrección de Jesucristo…" (I Pedro 3:21)
  • Diferente al bautismo de Juan por el arrepentimiento. (Hechos 19:1-7)
  • El bautizo del creyente es despues que Cristo vino siendo evidencia de salvacion y cumplimiento de la voluntad de Dios.

III.  Como ser bautizado?

  • La palabra griega “Baptizo: siginifica sumergir en agua.”
  • El bautizo del creedor es sumergirse completamente en agua, simbolizando una limpieza espiritual completa,
  • Ejemplo de Feliz y el eunuco etiopiano. (Hechos 8:36-38)

IV.  Cuando se debe de bautizar?

  • Bautismo de infancia - no hay referencia o ejemplo en la escritura.  Tiene que ser suficientemente mayor para tomar una decision informada acerca de ser bautizado.
  • Despues de arrepentimiento y salvacion.  "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved but whoever does not believe will be condemned." (Marcos 16:16)
  • Debe tener entendimiento de que significa ser bautizadp antes de tomar este paso.


  • Hechos 19:1-7 – El bautizo de Juan por arrepentimiento fue diferente al del creyente y recibio el Espiritu Santo.
  • Colosenses 2:12 - "Ustedes la recibieron al ser sepultados con él en el bautismo.  En él también fueron resucitados mediante la fe en el poder de Dios, quien lo resucitó de entre los muertos."
  • I Corintios 1:13-17 - "¡Cómo!  ¿Está dividido Cristo?  ¿Acaso Pablo fue crucificado por ustedes?  ¿O es que fueron bautizados en el nombre de Pablo?  Gracias a Dios que no bauticé a ninguno de ustedes, excepto…  Pues Cristo no me envió a bautizar, sino a predicar el evangelio, y eso sin discursos de sabiduría humana, para que la cruz de Cristo no perdiera su eficacia."
  • Efesios 4:3-6 - "Esfuércense por mantener la unidad del Espíritu mediante el vínculo de la paz. Hay un solo cuerpo y un solo Espíritu, así como también fueron llamados a una sola esperanza;  un solo Señor, una sola fe, un solo bautismo; un solo Dios y Padre de todos, que está sobre todos y por medio de todos y en todos.”
  • Lucas 12:50 - "Pero tengo que pasar por la prueba de un bautismo, y ¡cuánta angustia siento hasta que se cumpla!”
  • Marcos 10:39 - "Ustedes beberán de la copa que yo bebo — les respondió Jesús — y pasarán por la prueba del bautismo con el que voy a ser probado.”
  • Mateo 3:11 – “Yo los bautizo a ustedes con[a] agua para que se arrepientan.  Pero el que viene después de mí es más poderoso que yo, y ni siquiera merezco llevarle las sandalias.  Él los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y con fuego.”
  • Hechos 22:16 - "Y ahora, ¿Qué esperas?  Levántate, bautízate y lávate de tus pecados, invocando su nombre.”
