John the Baptist – Prepare Ye the Way

Today’s Verses Luke 1:11-17, Luke 1:76-79, John 1:14-15, Matthew 3:1-6, Matthew 3:11-17, and John 11:2-14

 

Verse of the Week 11 “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”

~  Matthew 11:11

 

1. Birth and Ministry of John the Baptist foretold.

  • Luke 1:11-13 – “Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.  When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.  But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.”

  • Luke 1:14-16 – “He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord.  He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.  He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God.”

  • Luke 1:17 – “And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous — to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

  • Luke 1:76-79 – “And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness  and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace.”

2. John baptizes in the Jordan – repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  • Matthew 3:1-3 – “In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”  This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”

  • Matthew 3:4-6 – “John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist.  His food was locusts and wild honey.  People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan.  Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.”

  • Matthew 3:11 – “I baptize you with water for repentance.  But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry.  He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

3. John Baptizes Jesus.

  • Matthew 3:13-15 – “Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.  But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”  Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.”  Then John consented.”

  • Matthew 3:16-17 – “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water.  At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.  And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

4.  John rejoices in Jesus’ ministry.

  • John 3:22-26 – “After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.  Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were coming and being baptized.  (This was before John was put in prison.)  An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing.  They came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, that man who was with you on the other side of the Jordan — the one you testified about—look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”

  • John 3:27-30 – “To this John replied, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.  You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’  The bride belongs to the bridegroom.  The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice.  That joy is mine, and it is now complete.  He must become greater; I must become less.”

5. Jesus’ affirms the incredible ministry of John the Baptist.

  • Matthew 11:2-6 – “When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’  Jesus replied, ‘Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.  Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.’”

  • Matthew 11:7-10 – “…What did you go out into the wilderness to see?  A reed swayed by the wind?  If not, what did you go out to see?  A man dressed in fine clothes?  No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces.  Then what did you go out to see?  A prophet?  Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.  This is the one about whom it is written: “‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’”

  • Matthew  11:11-14 – “Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.  From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and violent people have been raiding it.  For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.  And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.”

11 “De cierto os digo: entre los nacidos de mujer no se ha levantado nadie mayor que Juan el Bautista; sin embargo, el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos es mayor que él.”

1. Nacimiento y ministerio de Juan el Bautista predichos.

  • Lucas 1:11-13 – “Entonces se le apareció un ángel del Señor, de pie a la derecha del altar del incienso.  Al verlo, Zacarías se sobresaltó y se apoderó de él un temor terrible.  Pero el ángel le dijo: “Zacarías, no temas; tu oración ha sido escuchada.  Tu esposa Isabel te dará a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por nombre Juan.”

  • Lucas 1:14-16 – “Será un gozo y una alegría para ti, y muchos se alegrarán por su nacimiento, porque será grande a los ojos del Señor.  Nunca beberá vino ni ninguna otra bebida fermentada, y será lleno del Espíritu Santo incluso antes de nacer.  Él hará que muchos del pueblo de Israel vuelvan al Señor su Dios.”

  • Lucas 1:17 – “Y él irá delante del Señor con el espíritu y el poder de Elías, para hacer volver los corazones de los padres a los hijos, y de los desobedientes a la prudencia de los justos, para preparar al Señor un pueblo bien dispuesto.”

  • Lucas 1:76-79 – “Y tú, hijo mío, serás llamado profeta del Altísimo; porque irás delante del Señor para prepararle el camino, para dar a su pueblo el conocimiento de la salvación mediante el perdón de sus pecados, por la entrañable misericordia de nuestro Dios, por la cual el sol naciente nos visitará desde el cielo para iluminar a los que viven en tinieblas y en sombra de muerte, para guiar nuestros pasos por el camino de la paz.”

 

2. Juan bautiza en el Jordán: arrepiéntanse, porque el reino de los cielos se ha acercado.

  • Mateo 3:1-3 – “En aquellos días, Juan el Bautista llegó predicando en el desierto de Judea y diciendo: “Arrepiéntanse, porque el reino de los cielos se ha acercado.”  Este es aquel de quien habló el profeta Isaías: “Una voz que clama en el desierto: ‘Preparen el camino del Señor, enderecen sus sendas.’”

  • Mateo 3:4-6 – “La ropa de Juan era de pelo de camello, y llevaba un cinturón de cuero alrededor de la cintura.  Su alimento consistía en langostas y miel silvestre.  Acudían a él desde Jerusalén, toda Judea y toda la región del Jordán.  Confesando sus pecados, eran bautizados por él en el río Jordán.”

  • Mateo 3:11 – “Yo los bautizo con agua para arrepentimiento.  Pero después de mí viene uno más poderoso que yo, de quien no soy digno de llevar las sandalias.  Él los bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y fuego.”

 

3. Juan bautiza a Jesús.

  • Mateo 3:13-15 – “Entonces Jesús vino de Galilea al Jordán para ser bautizado por Juan.  Pero Juan intentaba disuadirlo, diciendo: “Yo necesito ser bautizado por ti, ¿Y tú vienes a mí?”  Jesús respondió: “Deja que así sea ahora; es conveniente que hagamos esto para cumplir toda justicia.”  Entonces Juan consintió.”

  • Mateo 3:16-17 – “En cuanto Jesús fue bautizado, subió del agua.  En ese momento los cielos se abrieron, y vio al Espíritu de Dios que descendía como una paloma y venía sobre él.  Y una voz del cielo dijo: “Este es mi Hijo amado, en quien tengo complacencia.”

 

4. Juan se regocija en el ministerio de Jesús.

  • Juan 3:22-26 – “Después de esto, Jesús y sus discípulos salieron a la campiña de Judea, donde pasó algún tiempo con ellos y bautizaba.  Juan también bautizaba en Enón, cerca de Salim, porque había mucha agua, y la gente venía y se bautizaba.  (Esto fue antes de que Juan fuera encarcelado).  Surgió una discusión entre algunos de los discípulos de Juan y cierto judío sobre el asunto del lavamiento ceremonial.  Fueron a Juan y le dijeron: Rabí, ese hombre que estaba contigo al otro lado del Jordán, de quien diste testimonio, mira, está bautizando, y todos acuden a él.

  • Juan 3:27-30 – “A esto Juan respondió: “Una persona solo puede recibir lo que le es dado del cielo.  Ustedes mismos pueden dar testimonio de que dije: ‘Yo no soy el Mesías, sino que soy enviado delante de él.’  La novia pertenece al novio.  El amigo que acompaña al novio lo espera y lo escucha, y se llena de alegría cuando oye la voz del novio.  Esa alegría es mía, y ahora es completa. Él debe crecer; yo debo disminuir.”

 

5. Jesús afirma el increíble ministerio de Juan el Bautista.

  • Mateo 11:2-6 – “Cuando Juan, que estaba en prisión, oyó hablar de los hechos del Mesías, envió a sus discípulos a preguntarle: “¿Eres tú el que ha de venir o debemos esperar a otro?”  Jesús respondió: “Vayan y cuéntenle a Juan lo que oyen y ven: los ciegos ven, los cojos andan, los leprosos quedan limpios, los sordos oyen, los muertos resucitan y a los pobres se les anuncia la buena nueva.  Dichoso el que no tropieza por causa de mí.”

  • Mateo 11:7-10 – “…¿Qué salieron a ver al desierto?  ¿Una caña mecida por el viento?  Si no, ¿qué salieron a ver? ¿A un hombre vestido con ropas finas?  No, los que visten con ropas finas están en los palacios de los reyes. Entonces, ¿qué salieron a ver? ¿A un profeta? Sí, les digo, y más que un profeta.  Este es aquel de quien está escrito: “Enviaré a mi mensajero delante de mí.”

  • Mateo 11:11-14 – “Les aseguro que entre los nacidos de mujer no se ha levantado nadie mayor que Juan el Bautista; sin embargo, el más pequeño en el reino de los cielos es mayor que él.  Desde los días de Juan el Bautista hasta ahora, el reino de los cielos ha sido sometido a violencia, y gente violenta lo ha saqueado.  Porque todos los profetas y la ley profetizaron hasta Juan.  Y si quieren aceptarlo, él es el Elías que había de venir.”
